Across The Universe __LINK__

The song's lyrical structure is straightforward: three repetitions of a unit consisting of a verse, the line "Jai guru deva om" and the line "Nothing's gonna change my world" sung four times. The lyrics are highly image-based, with abstract concepts reified with phrases like thoughts "meandering", words "slithering", and undying love "shining". The title phrase "across the universe" appears at intervals to finish lines, although it never cadences, always appearing as a rising figure, melodically unresolved. It finishes on the leading note; to the Western musical ear, the next musical note would be the tonic and would therefore sound complete.

Across the Universe

The following is an extract from our Lost in Space-Time newsletter. Each month, we hand over the keyboard to a physicist or two to tell you about fascinating ideas from their corner of the universe. You can sign up for Lost in Space-Time for free here.

Monday marks the 40th anniversary of the day the song wasrecorded. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of NASA's founding and theinception of The Beatles. Two other milestones also are being honored including, the 50th anniversary of Explorer 1, the first U.S. satellite, and the 45th birthdayof the Deep Space Network, an international network of antennas that supportsmissions to explore the universe.

The Earth's atmosphere blocks much of the light in the microwave band, so astronomersuse satellite-based telescopes to observe cosmic microwaves. The entire sky is a sourceof microwaves in every direction, most often referred to as the cosmic microwavebackground (or CMB for short). These microwaves are the remnant of the Big Bang, a termused to describe the early universe.

A very long time ago, all the matter in existence was scrunched together in a verysmall, hot ball. The ball expanded outward and became our universe as it cooled. Since theBig Bang, which is estimated to have taken place 13.8 billion years ago, it has cooled allthe way to just three degrees above absolute zero. It is this "three degrees" that wemeasure as the microwave background.

The first precise measurements of the temperature of the microwave background acrossthe entire sky was done by the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite from 1989 to1993. Since then, the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) refined the COBEmeasurements, operating from 2001 to 2010. More recently, the Planck mission launchedin 2009 and further improved astronomer's understanding of the CMB.

Cornell astronomers study the history and evolution of galaxies across the universe and throughout cosmic time, using both ground- and space-based telescopes spanning the full wavelength range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Instruments designed and assembled at Cornell to explore the dusty and molecular components of the Milky Way and galaxies near and far have been integral parts of the Spitzer Space Telescope and SOFIA. Using the Arecibo telescope, the ALFALFA: the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA Survey is providing the first complete census of gas bearing galaxies in the local universe. Surveys conducted with the future CCAT telescope will discover and catalog dusty galaxies in the early-universe

Let the light of the dancing stars lead you on a journey beyond majestic mountain peaks to the luminous rainbow galaxy swirling beyond the horizon. Using the reverse technique of painting from dark to light, this painting process is a fabulously satisfying painting experience. Simply layer on colors and watch in wonder as your masterpiece emerges! Paint the entire scene on one canvas for a solo painting, or collaborate with a partner across two canvases for a set that connects together for a stunning panoramic view. 041b061a72
